Rhett's bees are doing so well for their first season. We didn't think we would get any honey this year but the third box is full enough to harvest. Rhett rented a spinner and a hot knife. We set up a spot in the garage and got to work. Rhett removed the bees on his own (I wasn't about to help with that part). All of us helped in the extracting. Rhett used the hot knife to cut off the wax caps. Then you put the trays in the spinner. It takes quite a bit of spinning for all of the honey to get out. Next we opened up the hole at the bottom and strained the honey into a bucket. After that is was just filling up bottles.
This is the best tasting honey. Honey from the store has a bitter after taste but this honey is very sweet.
Rhett's friend Randy that is a year ahead of us got 60 pounds of honey from his hive this year. We ended up with about 15. Not too bad for a first year. Looking forward to next year and too much honey.
